Governor Cuomo Announces Completion of $7.8 Million Bridge Replacement Project in Montgomery County

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the completion of a $7.8 million infrastructure improvement project to replace a two-span bridge carrying the Thruway (I-90) over Flat Creek in Sprakers, Montgomery County. The two-year project was completed on time and on budget.

"Investing in vital infrastructure projects to improve transportation remains a top priority for the State of New York," Governor Cuomo said. "By investing in our roads, highways and bridges, we are creating safe, reliant thoroughfares while paving the way to growing the state's economy."

Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll said, "Under Governor Cuomo's leadership, the Thruway Authority is strategically reinvesting toll dollars into our infrastructure to ensure roads and bridges are safer and stronger for the hundreds of millions of motorists that rely on our system each year. This bridge is one of dozens of bridges that have been rehabilitated or replaced on the Thruway over the last several years and it will provide a safe, reliable travel thousands of motorists for decades to come."

In accordance with Governor Cuomo's Drivers First Initiative, the project was completed in stages to maintain two travel lanes in each direction to limit traffic disruptions throughout the duration of the project.

Senator George Amedore said, "Investing in infrastructure improvements and properly maintaining our roads and bridges is critical to the health and safety of our communities. The completion of this project, which I am happy to see completed on-time and on-budget, will create safer and more efficient conditions for the thousands of residents and visitors who travel over the bridge each day."

Assembly Member Angelo Santabarbara said, "Roads and bridges are the lifeblood of our upstate communities. The state's investment in this bridge improvement project is the kind of smart investment that really makes a difference for the rural communities of Montgomery County. This project ensures safer, more efficient travel for the more than 24,000 vehicles that travel over the bridge every day and easier access to local farms and businesses."

Montgomery County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort said, "Replacing infrastructure is a huge priority in Montgomery County. I'm grateful to the State for completing this bridge replacement project. The Flat Creek Bridge serves many residents in our community and its replacement will provide a major boost to our quality of life and regional economic outlook."

Originally built in 1953, the Flat Creek bridge is located between exit 28 (Fultonville - Route 30A) and exit 29 (Canajoharie - Route 10). More than 24,000 vehicles travel over the bridge per day.

Along with the replacement of the old bridge, the project features numerous safety upgrades, including increased shoulder widths, new guiderails and improved reflective line striping. The project was completed by Slate Hill Constructors of Warners, NY.

Over the last two years, the Thruway Authority Capital Program has funded more than $935 million in lettings which have led to the resurfacing of nearly 500 lane miles across the state and the replacement or rehabilitation of 32 bridges.
